KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia have answered the prime minister's call and will be part of the mission to evacuate Malaysians trapped in Egypt.

MAS operations director Captain Mohamed Azharuddin Osman said MH8010, a Boeing 747-400 aircraft, with seating capacity for 359, would depart from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 9am today and was scheduled to arrive in Cairo at 1.20pm Egyptian time (7.20pm in Malaysia).

"The flight is then scheduled to depart from Cairo at 4.20pm (Egyptian time) and arrive in Jeddah at 6.10pm (11.10pm in Malaysia). This will be followed by a series of shuttles between Jeddah and Cairo.

"MAS flights to Cairo are operated via EgyptAir under a code share service agreement between the two airlines."

Azharuddin said the airline's operations and technical crew would be positioned in Jeddah to help out with the mission.

"We will also be liaising with government officials for other logistics issues such as visa arrangements, accommodation and transfers for Malaysians entering Jeddah."

AirAsia will be sending an Airbus A320 to help ferry Malaysians out from Cairo and into Jeddah today and tomorrow.

The flights will be headed by its deputy group chief operating officer, Datuk Kamarudin Meranun. He said the flight, with an operation crew, would be making three trips daily between the two cities.

"The flight is scheduled to depart from the low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) at 2pm."

AirAsia will also send an A330 and an A340 to Jeddah to fly the Malaysians back home should they choose to return.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry has set up an operations room at Wisma Putra and the Malaysian embassy in Cairo for the public to get up-to-date information on the current situation in Egypt.
